THE MODERN HONOLULU
We took a vacation from our vacation and island hopped over to Honolulu for 36 hours. We went from the beautiful garden island of Kauai to the bustling metropolitan area of Waikiki Beach. Our Bay Area friends, Toro y Moi, were playing their final show of their Asia Tour leg in Honolulu and since two tropical storms were making it rain like crazy on Kauai, we decided to get some sun and see some friends.
We booked a last minute flight via Hawaiian Air (one of the few inner island airlines) and gambled with HotelTonight’s Daily Drop feature. We were looking at The Laylow, The Surfjack, Alohilani, and The Modern and the surprise Daily Drop price was for The Modern! (Each day you can unlock one extra discounted price but the catch is that you only have 15 minutes to snag the price.) We were headed to Honolulu to soak up some sun!
The Modern is adjacent to the insanity of Waikiki Beach, which was nice that it was walking/biking distance but not right out the front door. Upon arrival, the lobby feels a bit impersonal with nowhere to sit and a handful of desks that you’re directed to visit after checking in. An agent sits and talks with you about popular tours and events, which I know is supposed to be helpful but felt a bit aggressive and certainly not the kind of travel we are interested in. Once you make it out of the lobby, the rest of the hotel is incredibly lovely. The first floor hosts The Grove, an open air restaurant, the Sunrise pool with an accompanying bar, a cute little shop and plenty of lounge space. The second floor hosts the Sunset pool, an adult only zone that felt like a haven from all the families on vacation. All in all, it felt like a real steal to stay here. The rooms were clean and modern (duh!) and even had a bonus lounge zone AND balcony. I appreciate that they hold you bags before/after your stay and that you can use the pool in the meantime.
